Spotlight on Kaleidoscope: A Place Created for Creatives—and Designed to Inspire

Kaleidoscope, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, was first imagined early in 2020. The brainchild of Executive Director Jonathan Hanst, the vision for the space was based on his desire to “provide an opportunity to come into a place and be creative to other people in the community who have the motivation to do so.”

“Kaleidoscope is designed for people to experience the Joy of Creativity.”

The Magic of Kaleidoscope

Kaleidoscope opened in 2022 and three dedicated artists moved in. There are two other studios, one of which is a streaming radio station available 24/7 to aspiring DJs or music lovers who want to curate and share their playlists.

The final studio is a creative retreat room. One of the most unique things about the space is that it doesn’t matter what type of artist you are—painter, sculptor, writer, or anything else… you’re invited to book the space for the day to dream and create.

The space is also listed on Airbnb, so people outside of the bubble of Old Town Lafayette can visit and experience what Kaleidoscope is all about. And according to Hanst, “Leave feeling more serene, peaceful, and settled, and also understand this is how we do things in Lafayette.”

A Typical Day at Kaleidoscope

Simply put, Hanst says, “Nothing is typical.”

As noted, there are three artists in residence: Painter Lisa Pranam, Glassblower BGOLD Glass Art Studio, and Graphic Designer/Illustrator Gili Wolf.

The space is designed to be a sanctuary, it’s not busy with activity every single day. Rather, it’s focused on enabling people to do their thing… whatever that “thing” may be. There is a relative level of quiet, which ultimately helps fuel the creative process.

Getting the Community Involved

While Kaleidoscope is a respite for an inspired artistic mind, it’s not their goal to remain completely insular.

Beginning in January 2025, the organization is set to open its doors to allow people to come in and explore at a First Saturday Event.

“We want people to feel like they are never seeing the same art or space twice.”

Music as a Creative Language

As mentioned, Kaleidoscope isn’t only a space for artists. Mixmasters are welcome, too.

Because music is the universal language that unites us all, Kaleidoscope recognizes it as a tool to create connection and joy.

Kaleidoscope has Studio One, which is an on-site radio station—one that can be booked by anyone who is interested in getting some airtime.

Kaleidoscope Radio is an ad-free, 24/7 stream of pure musical love. It’s a community-driven station that invites aspiring DJs to become part of the experience—no matter if they simply want to share their favorite tunes with listeners or host their own talk show. Anyone is invited to come and take over the airwaves, sharing the sounds or thoughts that move them with the world.

Come Explore Kaleidoscope

The mission is to ensure the community at large knows Kaleidoscope exists and that it is inclusive of everyone who desires to follow their creative path—no matter their level of experience.

“I want people to understand that there are very unconventional ways of going about one’s life from a creative path standpoint. At Kaleidoscope, you can live life a little less ordinary and take chances.”
