The Playground Ensemble presents “Songs of Earth and Sky”

The Playground Ensemble will present “Songs of Earth and Sky,” a masterworks concert in which The Playground String Quartet explores humanity’s relationship with the Earth and sky through some of America’s front-running national composers including Caroline Shaw, John Luther Adams, Raven Chacon, Terry Riley, and Gabriela Smith. The performance will take place on Thursday, April 17, 7 p.m., at the Muse Performance Space, 200 E. South Boulder Road in Lafayette. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20, or $10 for students, and are available at www.playgroundensemble.org.

The program features “The Wind in High Places” by John Luther Adams (2011), “Plan & Elevation” by Caroline Shaw (2015), “The Journey of the Horizontal People” by Raven Chacon (2016), “Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector” by Terry Riley (1980), “Carrot Revolution” by Gabriela Smith (2015), and “Dark Skies” by Abby Kellems (2023).

Performers include Sarah Whitnah (violin), Robyn Julyan (violin), Allyson Stibbards (viola), and David Short (cello).

The Playground Ensemble is group of professional musicians, composers, educators and fans dedicated to presenting chamber music as a living art form.

ARTmando: Mural Celebration

Join the Public Art Committee (PAC), ACRD, and artist ARTmando, aka Armando Silva on Saturday, April 19 to celebrate Lafayette’s newest and prominently placed mural, El Cielo y La Tierra. Painted on the north facing wall of Señor Gomez restaurant, this mural faces the intersection of S. Public Road and Emma St.

This project is the result of PAC’s recently adopted Public Art Pathways program that prioritizes diversity and representation in Lafayette’s Permanent Art Collection. The Lafayette Urban Renewal Authority was a funding partner with the City for this project.

Join us and enjoy music by Mariachi Las Dahlias, an introduction to the mural by ARTmando, and mingle with community.

Join Herbalist Sofia Arana-Miranda for a unique event where Western traditions collide with the rich herbal practices of Mexico.

Learn how Yerberos, Curanderos, and other types of Folk Healers in Mexico use the herbs we know and love in their practices of physical, culinary, holistic and spiritual healing.

Whether you’re a seasoned herbalist or just curious about natural remedies, this event is perfect for anyone interested in holistic healing.

This class is part lecture part hands on. In person attendees are invited to bring a notebook and pen and will be offered a cup of herbal-infused cacao, crafted by Sofia. They will also get make their own “Agua Florida” (herbal infusion used for cleansing and protection). All supplies will be provided with purchase of ticket.

Local Author Book Launch Party

Stuffed Animal Sleepover at the Lafayette History Museum

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to spend the night at a museum? Now your stuffed animal best friend can do just that and tell you all about it!

Kids and parents, bring a stuffed animal, doll, action figure, etc., to the museum on Friday afternoon for a storytime, then leave your toy overnight. Museum staff will snap some photos of the adventures your toys get up to! Then on Saturday morning, come back by to pick up your toy, get the photos of their sleepover, and explore the museum just like they did!

All children must be accompanied by an adult during both drop off and pick up.

DROP OFF: Friday, March 28 at 2:30pm or 4pm (ticket reservation required).

PICK UP: Saturday, March 29 between 8am-12pm

Any toys not picked up before 12 on Saturday will be available for pick-up the following week.

Indigenous Beadwork and History Workshop

This workshop will be part history lesson, part crafting workshop. I am excited to share my knowledge of Indigenous beadwork, along with some history and geography about three different methods of beading we’ll be learning. The goal is to gain knowledge of the history that the white ancestors tried to obliterate, and fill our heart with appreciation for the art and lives of Indigenous people.

Movement Medicine for LGBTQIA2S+ Teens

I will tailor the class to the interests of who shows up, but topics will include tap, ballet, contemporary, improv, stretching/strengthening, mindfulness, yoga, and self-defense.
