There’s a new little studio in Old Town Lafayette located in The Lumberyards and tucked between The Read Queen and East Simpson Coffee, with about 500 square feet of courage, creativity, and (on any given day) a few yoga mats, a microphone, and a student making cat sounds into a straw.
The sign on the door says Fiercely Vocal.
The name? A nod to the inner Sasha Fierce living in all of us. That bold alter ego who’s not afraid to sing out loud, say what they mean, or wear sparkly glasses to brunch. Fiercely Vocal isn’t just about singing. It’s about overcoming. One wobble, one stretch, one weird meow at a time.
The Voice Stuck Inside You
Before she was a coach, Devyn Price was a mom, a musician, and (ironically), someone who couldn’t sing in front of people without crying. She had a background in music but somewhere between motherhood and moving around the country, the joy of singing had gotten tangled up in anxiety and self-doubt.
One day, on a whim, she bought herself an electric guitar (cue dramatic turning point music) and enrolled in adult lessons at a local School of Rock. There someone asked: “Hey, Dev, can you sing?”
Her answer? “Can I, or will I?”
With the help of a nurturing community (and a little accidental exposure therapy), Devyn slowly found her way back to her voice, and then, to her calling. Teaching, she discovered, lit her up more than performing ever did. Especially teaching people who had their own battles with confidence, expression, or the ever-familiar fear of being seen.
“I work with people who have voices stuck in their bodies,” Devyn says. “People who put themselves last. People who feel like it’s too late, or like they need to be ‘good’ before they’re even allowed to try. But I also work with seasoned singers—people who’ve been performing for years but feel like something’s missing. Whether you’re just starting or you’ve been on stage for decades, if your voice doesn’t feel fully yours, we can work on that.”
At Fiercely Vocal, there’s no such thing as too late.
Taking That First Step
Devyn’s teaching isn’t your average “scales and posture” routine. Yes, vocal lessons are the heart of her work—but they come wrapped in bodywork, laughter, and some non-traditional tools.
She doesn’t toss around vague terms like “sing from your diaphragm” without breaking them down. And if you’ve ever been told “don’t sing from your throat” and then promptly panicked because… where else would the sound come from?… you’ll fit right in.
Your first session at Fiercely Vocal might leave you thinking “what the heck was that… but I want to come back,” and that’s by design.
Devyn starts by getting to know you. Not just your voice, but your goals, your energy, your taste in music (bring on the Broadway nerds, the 90s alt rock fans, and the quiet ones who only sing in the car). You’ll chat. You’ll laugh. You’ll figure out if you click, which is why she offers a free 30-minute intro session.
And she’ll always ask: Are you ready to sing today?
Because not everyone is. And that’s totally okay.
If you’re not quite there, she might guide you through gentle movement instead. Or grounding exercises. Or her favorite go-to: Where are your feet? When Devyn says it, she’s inviting you to step out of your spinning, anxious thoughts and back into the now—into your body, your breath, your physical reality.
“Anxiety often pulls us into the future (‘What if I mess up?’ ‘What will they think?’) or the past (‘I was awful last time’), and we get trapped in our heads, detached from our actual physical selves,” said Devyn. “By drawing attention to your feet, you’re not just thinking about being grounded—you’re physically becoming grounded. It’s a somatic cue. A reset button.”
In other words: “Where are your feet?” is Devyn-speak for “You’re okay. Start here.”
When you are ready to make a sound, you might make some weird ones. Meows. Sirens. Bubbles. Cork-in-the-mouth hums. You may find yourself on a yoga ball. Or holding a resistance band. Or singing while lying on the floor. Her bag of tricks is quirky but purposeful. Everything is designed to get your voice moving freely, safely, and joyfully.
At Fiercely Vocal, you start with where you are. Not where you think you should be.
The Student in the Elton John Glasses
One of Devyn’s favorite stories involves a teenager who could barely speak above a whisper during her first few lessons. Arms crossed. Voice shaking. “We didn’t sing for weeks,” Devyn recalls. “We just moved. Talked. Let her feel safe.”
Fast forward: that same student took the stage in a live band performance, belting Benny and the Jets in full-blown Elton John sunglasses.
Mic in hand. Voice out loud. Fierce.
That’s what Fiercely Vocal is built for—not just pitch and tone, but full-on life energy.
Who It’s For
Anyone with a voice (which, spoiler, includes you).
Fiercely Vocal welcomes everyone from first-time singers and shy speakers to seasoned performers looking to reconnect with their craft. Students come for vocal coaching, creative expression, gentle yoga, Buti movement, or just a place to take up space.
Devyn’s dream is to create a nurturing, inclusive, welcoming space for anyone brave enough to show up… even if all they can do that day is walk past the studio door and think about going in. That still counts.
“I want a community of people who are learning to be their authentic selves,” she says. “People who are excited to try. Who celebrate each other. Who reach behind them to help others up the mountain.”
No matter your age, experience level, or anxiety level, Devyn meets you where you are. With humor, compassion, and probably a TV reference you weren’t expecting (she’s a Buffy the Vampire Slayer and 90s pop culture aficionado).
And Lafayette, she says, is exactly the kind of place that makes this kind of connection possible. “It already has so much heart. I just want to add to it.”
Start Where You Are
If you’ve ever said:
“I’d love to sing, but I’m not good enough.”
“I’m too anxious to try.”
“I missed my chance.”
“I’ve been singing for years, but it doesn’t feel right anymore.”
You haven’t missed it. You’re right on time.
Start with your curiosity. Start with your breath. Start with your feet.
And when you’re ready, Devyn will be right there with a yoga ball, straw, and Elton glasses at the ready.
